Overview

United States Coast Guard Aviation is a critical component of the Coast Guard's operational capability. Coast Guard aviators and aircrews perform search and rescue, law enforcement, marine environmental protection, and homeland security missions across the United States and its territories.

Coast Guard Aviation operates approximately 200 aircraft from 24 air stations located throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The aviation community consists of pilots, flight mechanics, avionics electrical technicians, and rescue swimmers who work together to execute the Coast Guard's diverse missions.

Mission Areas

Search and Rescue

Coast Guard aviation crews respond to maritime emergencies 24/7, rescuing mariners in distress from sinking vessels, medical emergencies, and natural disasters. Rescue swimmers deploy from helicopters to save lives in the most dangerous conditions.

Law Enforcement

Aircraft provide surveillance and support for drug interdiction, migrant interdiction, and fisheries enforcement operations. Helicopters deploy armed helicopter interdiction tactical squadrons (HITRON) to stop drug smuggling vessels.

Homeland Security

Aviation assets protect ports, waterways, and coastal areas. Helicopters provide air cover for major events and work with other agencies to secure critical infrastructure.

Environmental Protection

Aircraft conduct pollution patrols, detecting and documenting oil spills and illegal discharges. They support response operations during major environmental incidents.
